Paragard IUDs are a form of long-term birth control. Recently, there have been health concerns surrounding the Paragard IUDS breaking while still in the uterus. Lawsuits are gaining momentum as there are concerns that the doctors did not warn their patients about potential breakages.

Paragard IUDs: Dangers and Side Effects

Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are a long-term form of birth control where a device is placed inside of the uterus to prevent pregnancy. Most IUDs today use hormonal treatment to prevent pregnancy. However, certain IUDs use copper to disrupt reproductive processes. IUDs are surgically placed in the uterus, with the materials inside regulating the hormones generally associated with pregnancy. They are prescribed not only as birth control but also for women who suffer from unusually painful periods and other hormonal issues.

What is the controversy with Paragard IUDs?

Paragard is a brand of IUDs that used copper to produce hormonal variations. According to the FDA’s Adverse Events Reporting System database, there have been many cases that show serious health effects from the breakage of the IUD in the uterus.

Of those cases, users reported:

  • 3186 cases of “device breakage”
  • 1910 “serious” cases
  • 102 cases of hospitalization and life-threatening complications

While this may be a small percentage of the IUDs implanted, this is still concerning for the many women who have or will get IUDs. Many women who have had IUDs implanted express concern as the potential for IUDs breaking was never discussed with them by their gynecologist.

What are the side effects of an IUD breaking?

IUD breakage is a serious concern. If you think your IUD has broken, consult a gynecologist immediately. Some of the side effects of a broken IUD include:

  • Holes in the uterus
  • Pelvic pain
  • Scarring
  • Organ damage
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Infection
  • Infertility

Can the Paragard IUD cause copper toxicity?

Copper toxicity is a result of overexposure to copper and can have painful side effects, including:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Jaundice

While there are no proven links between copper toxicity and Paragard IUDs, there are still concerns surrounding the copper center of the IUD. There have been cases of copper being left behind once the IUD has been removed, which can affect uterine health. There are also ongoing studies concerning the results of potential copper toxicity.

Has Paragard been recalled?

Paragard has made no decision to recall their IUDs, copper or hormonal. No statements were made by Paragard addressing the lawsuit or the potential harmfulness of the product.

Have there been any lawsuits against Paragard for their IUDs?

There is growing support online for a class-action lawsuit, with over one hundred individual lawsuits having been filed against Paragard. The number of lawsuits is enough to warrant a potential class action lawsuit, with the settlements estimated to be between $10,000 and $400,000.

These lawsuits are founded on the basis that the manufacturer did not produce the IUDs correctly and that there was not ample warning of the possibility that they could break.
